Drama Coaching - The Drama School

The 2017 production of ‘Captain Incredible’ will be supported by the work of The Drama School. These teacher/directors will work closely with the year 5/6 students throughout their experience.

The Drama School has been working with children in the Performing Arts for more than 16 years. Our aim is that students acquire the technical skills needed to experience, construct and enjoy their theatrical experience while becoming increasingly self- aware and proud of their achievements.

In the last 18 months the company has written and directed Pre-School performances while being responsible for both Balwyn Primary School and REAL’s (Intellectually disabled adults) productions. The Directors also teach and co-ordinate over 200 children learning drama with them in 7 venues based in the Eastern Suburbs. One of the venues is located at Camberwell South Primary and it was here that the opportunity to work with the staff and children at the school began. As a result The Drama School had the pleasure of shaping and directing the 2015 Camberwell South performance of ‘Kids in Space’!

Both Sharon Foley and Carla Gilzean have directed productions in some of Melbourne’s leading schools and work extensively with young people in educating them through drama and the arts. Their passion for achieving excellence and the enormous personal benefits of drama and theatre education drive their work. They are thrilled to be invited to join the production team at Camberwell South and look forward to watching the children thrive during their rehearsals and final performance!

Dance and Choreography: Kate Stanford

Kate Stanford became involved with CSPS in 2004 when her daughter started in prep and she was supported by the school to create ‘Dance Club at CSPS’.

Kate trained and qualified as a dance teacher in England with The International Dance Teachers Association, London (Theater Branch) before travelling extensively in UK and abroad as a professional dancer.

Since arriving in Australia she has been able to continue with her passion for dance and the performing arts in schools, colleges, clubs, and theatre groups.  She believes EVERYONE should have an opportunity to dance and has taught, coached and choreographed children aged 2 - 102!

Kate is really excited to be working on the CSPS musical production ‘Captain Incredible’ this year.

Voice Coaching: Catherine Lyons

Catherine’s interest in Musical Theatre was ignited in Secondary College when teachers allowed her to Choreograph the school’s Rock Eisteddfod and Musical Theatre pieces.  While studying Music, Dance and Drama at Melbourne University, she sang in TV Choirs behind the Melbourne Symphony Orchestra, and in the Channel 9 Christmas Eve Carols.

Since , she has Directed 4 major school musicals, including 3 at CSPS (Robin In Da Hood, Sheik Rattle and Roll, and Seussical).  In 2004, her choreographed piece won the Wakakirri Victorian Championships. Many of Catherine’s former students have taken up careers in the ARTS and offer to help out CSPS productions.

Catherine is looking forward to working with the team on ‘Captain Incredible’.

Scriptwriter: Ross McQueen

Ross has three boys at Camberwell South, Will in Grade 6, Nate in Grade 3 and Woody in Grade 1. He started writing musicals when his wife, Deirdre, got a job as a primary music teacher. She had to put on a show but couldn’t find any suitable, so she asked him to write one for her. The stipulations were simple – as inclusive as possible and fun. He then wrote new shows every year for the next ten years, covering everything from fine art theft to fairy tales and lots in-between. The shows seemed to get bigger each year and are still much looked forward to events on Deirdre’s school calendar, although they only get performed every second year now. He thinks it’s great to see how much the kids get out of putting on shows. It is a really good experience for them to get up on stage and dance and sing and act and it is something they generally love doing.

Production Coordinators: Annabelle Owens, Mandy Henia and Lauren Hauser

Annabelle, Mandy and Lauren have been involved in the past 3 Camberwell South Productions; the two whole school performances of Quest and Lonestar Cowboy, as well as 2015’s Senior Production, Kids in Space.

Annabelle has a strong background in music, from studying instruments and performing in concerts at a young age. She also loves going to the theatre and watching musical performances, her favourite being Pirates of Penzance.

Mandy has been heavily involved in the performing arts throughout her schooling. Focusing on dance as a performer and working behind the scenes designing and creating costumes as well as being the stage manager with light and sound calls. This has lead to her extensive knowledge of stage management through years of coordinating performances. Mandy also loves going to the theatre, there are not many plays that she hasn’t seen!

Lauren also loves going to the theatre. She enjoys working on school productions and seeing students develop their confidence outside the classroom. Lauren also loves seeing the students take on different roles and collaborating with peers and teachers from different year levels.

They are all very excited to be coordinating another whole school production, Captain Incredible, in 2017.
