Research shows that there are numerous benefits of language learning, including boosting brain power, improving memory and improved academic performance.

CSPS teaches French language learning from Prep to Year 6. The four key communication skills of listening, speaking, reading and writing are introduced in the same order that children learn their first language.

Units of inquiry appropriate to each year level are taught through dance and movement, stories, songs, poetry, games and visual art activities. Students develop linguistic competence, intercultural capability, a respect for and understanding of diverse cultures and an enhanced understanding of how language works.

The Victorian Government “My Passport to Languages”, is used alongside our Prep to Year 3 program to further support and engage the students.

Year 4 to 6 students develop an understanding of grammatical structures and extend their French vocabulary. Units of study include “My Place in Space” which begins with “My Community” and leads to World Geography including the Francophone world. Upper school students use French in research reports and in illustrated picture books which they share with their Lower school buddies.

All students from Year 3 to Year 6 are encouraged to enter the Alliance Francaise de Melbourne Berthe Mouchette Poetry Contest. This opportunity helps develop vocabulary, pronunciation and self-confidence.

Two French Captains are included in the Student Leadership Team, who work to promote the French language and culture to the school community weekly in lunchtime French Club, on Make Music Day, Bastille Day, Harmony Day and in assemblies throughout the year.

Students may participate in a weekly lunchtime French Club run by our French Captains to participate in activities which involve French food, games, art and craft and literature.
