CLASSROOM MUSIC

We SING, We Play, We CREATE, We Perform, We DO!  From the moment students arrive in Prep to the time they graduate in Year 6, students are singing, playing, creating, performing and DOING.

The classroom music program is foundational to an extensive music program throughout the school.  Old and new approaches to teaching are married to effectively deliver skills and musical literacy, as well as open ended, student-centred music creations. So, Kodaly, Orff and Musical Futures philosophies of teaching are used as a foundation to deliver the Music Program at CSPS, and these expand to include composition, ICT and new pedagogies.

Kodaly approaches are used in the junior years to develop aural/singing skills, understandings in timbre and imaginative play, making for a vital and happy program.  Aural understandings are then translated to written symbols using games and tuned percussion, engaging students making for a vibrant and educational program

Orff approaches are used through to the middle years, where bands and part playing is explored on tuned percussion.  The Jon Madin xylophone program is implemented to provide joyful experiences in sound.  Jon attends the school as a part of our incursion programs, extending the use of marimbas and exposing the students to his ‘invented instruments’.  Students then create their own music at every level.

Musical Futures philosophies, ICT, new pedagogies and composition are central to the senior years.  Students explore how to create music for a purpose using various iPad apps and/or live band instruments. New student pieces are recorded and performed for reflection and feedback.

Further, classroom music explores:

  • Playing the xylophone, ukulele and djembe

  • Singing and performing on a regular basis

  • Developing performance presentation skills to be confident before an audience

  • Well known symphonic works

  • Musical theatre skills to prepare for the bi annual whole school production

These classes develop grounding, knowledge and confidence in the performing arts so that the students are able to explore avenues of self-expression and make ongoing informed choices about further participation and future music consumption in adult life.

The Music Specialist oversees a team of highly skilled professionals teaching individual instrumental lessons, and running an extensive, sequential ensemble and choral program.  The classroom program is foundational to the extended elective programs on offer.  There are a range of extension opportunities available to those students who wish to be involved.

WHOLE SCHOOL MUSICAL THEATRE PRODUCTION

Every second year, the Music Specialist works with teachers and parents to lead the implementation of a Whole School Musical. Staged at The Besen Centre at Mount Scopus College in Burwood, every student from Prep through to Year 6 performs a song and dance routine to deliver this showcase of talent.  Student agency is encouraged throughout the rehearsal and developmental stages.   Any ideas offered by students in art design, dance choreography, or dramatic elements are encouraged and used in the final presentation as much as possible.

Camberwell South Primary School celebrates music and performing arts, and supports extensive musical experiences.
